How to use Nine Men's Morris

A classic strategy board with nine stones per player. Challenge a local practice AI or share the board with a friend.

  1. Choose Computer or two players on this device, then press Play. White places first.
  2. Place nine stones each. Three along a marked line form a mill: remove an opposing stone outside a mill unless all are in mills.
  3. After placing, select a stone and move to a linked point. With three stones, fly to any empty point. Reduce your opponent to two stones or block all their moves.

Questions

Which rules are used?

Classic nine-stone Morris on 24 points, with flying at three stones and one capture per newly completed mill, even if two mills form together. An existing mill can be opened and closed again. Three repeated movement positions with the same player to move, or 100 movement turns without a capture, draw the game.

How strong is the AI?

Easy, Medium and Hard use bounded local heuristic search in a Web Worker. This is a practice opponent, not a solved or tournament-strength engine. No board or moves are sent to a server.

Can I play a remote opponent?

This page offers computer play and two players sharing one device. It does not offer remote multiplayer rooms.

Will my game be saved?

Unfinished legal games are saved locally with no expiry. Return to this route and choose Resume. Completed games start fresh. Storage errors are shown; existing saves are not cleared. Clearing site data removes saves.
