VIN Decoder

Check VIN characters, check digit, WMI and year codes locally. Press the separate NHTSA button only if you want to send the VIN for official specifications.

Local checks · optional disclosed external request

Only the next button sends data: VIN and optional year go through Pevlika to NHTSA vPIC. No vehicle-history information is provided.

Official vPIC API · VIN rules and year table

How to use VIN Decoder

  1. Enter a VIN and choose the applicable U.S. profile, or leave applicability unspecified.
  2. Read local validation and year-cycle assumptions.
  3. Optionally enter the known model year and request NHTSA decoding. This sends the VIN via Pevlika to NHTSA.

Questions

Does validation prove a vehicle exists?

No. A matching check digit only checks transcription. Model year codes repeat every 30 years; the position-7 rule is applied only when you select the U.S. passenger/MPV/truck up-to-10,000-lb profile.

What leaves my browser?

Local calculations send nothing. The explicit NHTSA button sends VIN and optional model year to Pevlika, which requests the official vPIC API. Pevlika caches a bounded result in memory for up to 10 minutes, with no long-term VIN storage or VIN analytics. NHTSA receives the VIN under its own practices.

Is this a vehicle history report?

No. It does not provide accident, owner, mileage, theft or title history. Country/manufacturer/vehicle details are shown only where supplied by official vPIC; the local country hint recognizes only documented U.S. WMI prefixes.
