How to use Japanese Romaji / Kana Converter

Transliterate between Romaji, Hiragana and Katakana with a live preview. This converts spelling, without translating or guessing Kanji readings.

  1. Choose the input and output scripts.
  2. Enter Romaji or kana, using explicit vowels for long sounds.
  3. Review warnings and copy or download the transliteration.

How it’s calculated

Particles are transliterated as written: は → ha, へ → he and を → wo. This tool does not infer grammar or pronunciation from context.

Katakana and Hiragana convert character by character, including voiced and small kana. Half-width kana normalize locally. Hepburn output uses ji for both じ/ぢ and zu for both ず/づ; reverse conversion is inherently lossy. Use di/du to type ぢ/づ, thi/dhi for てぃ/でぃ, and x or l prefixes for standalone small kana.

About Japanese Romaji / Kana Converter

Use standard Hepburn spellings such as shi, chi and tsu, or keyboard aliases such as si, ti and tu. Type kya for きゃ, doubled consonants for small っ, and an apostrophe after syllabic n before a vowel or y: shin'you → しんよう. The word konnichiha becomes こんにちは.

Kana-to-Romaji preserves written vowels: おう becomes ou and おお becomes oo. The long mark ー repeats the preceding vowel, so コーヒー becomes koohii. For Romaji input use explicit vowels, or a hyphen for ー; macrons cannot determine the original kana spelling and remain unchanged with a warning.

Questions

Can this convert Kanji into a reading?

No. Kanji and other unmatched text stay unchanged. Supply the reading in kana if you want Romaji.

How are n and small tsu handled?

n before a consonant or at the end becomes ん; n' separates it from a following vowel or y. Doubled consonants produce っ; matcha produces まっちゃ and kana っち becomes tchi.

Can I round-trip every spelling?

No. Hepburn merges some kana, long-mark output loses the mark, and input punctuation may use different conventions. The preview makes the result visible. Iteration marks and unsupported historical characters remain as written.
