Read a dictionary entry by meaning
Look up light to compare a noun (visible illumination), an adjective (not heavy) and a verb (to illuminate). A sentence determines which sense you need: “a light bag” describes weight, while “turn on the light” names illumination.
Each entry groups definitions by part of speech and shows recorded example sentences and General American IPA where available. Device speech depends on the voices installed in your browser; it is separate from the phonetic transcription. Inflected forms such as mice lead to their base word, mouse.

WordNet is a lexical reference, not a live news dictionary: new slang, specialist terms and proper names may be absent. No entry means no matching entry in this dataset, not that the word is invalid English.

Questions
Is my text or search sent anywhere?
No. Words are looked up in dictionary files your browser downloads, and checking runs on your device. Searches live in the address bar after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server.
Where do the definitions come from?
Definitions, synonyms and antonyms come from Princeton WordNet 3.1 and pronunciations from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, both freely licensed. Inflected forms such as “went” or “mice” lead to their base word.
Can I hear the pronunciation?
Yes. The speaker button uses your device’s built-in voice, and the IPA spelling shows the General American pronunciation.
