How to use Equation Solver
Type an equation with “=”. Separate several equations with commas to solve a linear system.
- Type the equation, for example x^3 - 6x^2 + 11x - 6 = 0.
- Optionally choose which letter to solve for.
- Read exact solutions (fractions, radicals, complex numbers) and the method used.
Questions
Which equations are solved exactly?
Linear and quadratic equations always; higher polynomials when they have rational roots, with any remaining quadratic solved by the formula. Remaining factors and non-polynomial equations are solved numerically.
Can it solve for a letter other than x?
Yes. Choose the variable, or type “solve … for y”. Equations with other letters are solved when they are linear in that variable.
Why was a solution rejected?
In rational equations, values that make a denominator zero are not allowed even if they solve the multiplied-out equation; they are listed as rejected.
