How to use Factoring Calculator
Type a polynomial to factor it completely over the rational numbers. For whole-number factors of a number, use the Factors Calculator.
- Type a polynomial such as 2x^2 + 7x + 3 or x^4 - 16.
- Read the factored form and the method: common factor, rational roots or a pattern.
- Factors that cannot be split further over the rationals, such as x² + 4, are left as they are.
Questions
What does “over the rationals” mean?
Factors only use whole numbers and fractions. x² − 2 is left whole because its roots ±√2 are irrational.
Can it factor expressions with two letters?
Yes, by taking out common factors and factoring same-degree expressions such as x² − 4y² = (x − 2y)(x + 2y).
How do I factor a number instead?
Use the Factors Calculator or the Prime Factorization Calculator for whole numbers.
