Why are my iPhone photos HEIC?

Since iOS 11, iPhones use HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) because it stores the same quality in about half the space of JPG. Many apps and websites still don’t support it.

Is there a size limit?

Up to 15 MB and 20 megapixels per photo — enough for standard 12 MP iPhone photos. For 48 MP photos, export them as JPG from the Photos app instead.

What about Live Photos or burst photos?

The main still image is converted. The video part of a Live Photo is not included.

How can I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos will be saved as JPG.
