How to use Solar System Explorer

See where the planets are around the Sun today or on any date, compare their sizes and open a planet for its facts and your weight there.

  1. Look at the orbit map for today, or pick another date.
  2. Tap a planet, or choose it from the list, for its facts and distance from Earth.
  3. Enter your weight to see what you would weigh on every planet.

Questions

What are the planets in order from the Sun?

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006.

How accurate are the planet positions?

Positions use NASA JPL’s approximate orbital elements, valid from 1800 to 2050 and accurate to well under a degree for this top-down view. Distances are shown compressed so the inner planets stay visible; switch on “Distances to scale” to compare.

Why do some moon counts have a plus sign?

Astronomers keep confirming new small moons of the giant planets, so counts such as Saturn’s change. The plus sign marks a lower bound as of 2025.

How is my weight on another planet calculated?

Your Earth weight is multiplied by the planet’s surface gravity divided by Earth’s (9.80665 m/s²). For the gas and ice giants, “surface” means the cloud level where pressure equals one bar.
