How to use Clinometer
Lay the phone along a slope, or look along its top edge at the top of a tree or building, to read the angle in degrees and percent grade.
- Press Start and allow motion access.
- Lay the phone along the slope, or sight along its top edge at a target; tap Hold to freeze the reading.
- Enter your distance from the target and eye height to estimate its height.
Formula & assumptions
- Readings come straight from your device’s sensors and stay on this device. Phone sensors are approximate; use a dedicated instrument where accuracy matters.
Questions
What is percent grade?
Rise over run × 100. A 45° slope is a 100% grade; a 5.7° slope is about 10%.
How is height calculated?
Height = distance × tan(angle) + eye height, using the horizontal distance to the base of the object.
