How to use Gyroscope Test
- Open this page on a phone or tablet and press Start.
- Allow motion access if asked.
- Rotate the device around each axis and watch the rates and the 3D phone.
Formula & assumptions
- Readings come straight from your device’s sensors — nothing is simulated, recorded or sent.
Questions
What do alpha, beta and gamma mean?
Rotation around the Z axis (alpha, turning flat on a table), the X axis (beta, tipping forward/back) and the Y axis (gamma, tilting left/right).
Why do the rates drift slightly at rest?
Tiny non-zero values are normal sensor noise. A large constant value while the phone is still points to a faulty or uncalibrated gyroscope.
My phone shows tilt but no rotation rate — why?
Some budget phones have no gyroscope and estimate tilt from the accelerometer only, so the rotation rate stays empty.
