- On a phone, tap “Start compass”, hold it flat away from metal and turn until the arrow points up.
Formula & assumptions
- Readings come straight from your device’s sensors and stay on this device. Phone sensors are approximate; use a dedicated instrument where accuracy matters.
Questions
How is the Qibla direction calculated?
It is the initial great-circle bearing from your position to the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E) — the shortest path over the Earth’s surface, as used by most Islamic authorities.
Why might the compass be a few degrees off?
Phone compasses are affected by nearby metal and magnets, and many Android browsers report magnetic rather than true north. Calibrate with a figure-eight motion and check against the bearing in degrees.
Is my location sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens on your device and your location is not stored.
